Thanks for being kind, yet uncompromising when need be (like for not signing for those fans who push little kids out of the way, trying to get your autograph). Thanks for being a complete anomaly…like a tennis genius and complete G on court and yet the goofiest guy around. Thanks for being so impeccably elegant you bring us all to tears and yet at the same time keep us laughing when you can’t keep a straight face during certain interviews. Thanks for all the emotions, all the early mornings and late nights, all the jubilant, hug-everybody-in-sight celebrations and the complete crawl-up-into-a-fetal-position meltdowns. Thanks for inspiring me to watch hours of cruddy little live-streams and 15 minutes of choppy coverage on ESPN and TSN just to get a glimpse of your matches live….and to endure through their equally horrendous commentating. Actually, you’re worth it.
Thanks for not requiring me to wear earplugs when I watch you. Thanks for loving the sport so much that certain legends of the game get you teary-eyed and jittery. After matches, thanks for remembering to wave at the camera and spread ridiculous smiles on our faces. Thanks for being a global icon and yet still find time to sign and send via post an autograph to every fan mail that asks for one…because you know not everyone has the luxury of seeing you. Thanks Roger for giving us an autograph this week. The list goes on and on. I guess what I’m trying to say is thanks for just being… you. :-)
May the awesome journey and good memories continue,
Happy Birthday, Roger (aka. Captain Wasabi*)…keep being you!
*Yeah you’re officially a ‘fan’s fan’ if you know what Captain Wasabi is
